Check Federal BOP Releases

To find someone released from federal custody after a Gates County connection, first decide whether the person was a sentenced BOP prisoner or a federal pretrial prisoner controlled by the U.S. Marshals Service. The public BOP locator is useful for federal prison history and release dates, but it does not resolve every USMS contract-jail placement. A federal docket or clerk record supplies detention and release orders. “Not in BOP custody” means only that BOP custody ended; another jail, supervision term, or immigration authority may still apply.

Gates Federal Source Chain

The Gates Sheriff may document a local arrest or receiving jail, the county request channel reaches Gates-held transport records, and the Gates Clerk resolves any local case. A federal docket, USMS record and BOP result begin where federal authority takes control. Dates and identifiers must link the two systems.

Note: A local Gates record cannot by itself establish when later federal custody ended or changed.

Match Federal Release Terms

A federal record can contain a pretrial custody phase, a later BOP sentence and supervised release. Match the locator date to the correct judgment and register number. A prior BOP term or another person's similar name cannot resolve a current Gates-linked event. The case number, sentence dates and custodian sequence provide the needed link.

Note: Match the BOP register number to the federal judgment before relying on a displayed release date.

Federal Gates Release Scope

No operating federal prison was identified in Gates County. Federal custody is a case-driven route, not a local Gates facility. A person charged in federal court may be held under USMS control in a contract jail. After conviction and designation, a sentenced person may enter BOP custody. Acquittal, dismissal, a federal release order, supervised release, delivery to BOP, or transfer to another authority can each end one phase.

A move out of a Gates-linked outside jail does not prove federal release. It may represent delivery to USMS or BOP. Conversely, a BOP result showing release does not describe a prior county booking or later immigration hold. Identify the federal docket, register number, detention order, judgment, or transfer document before selecting the federal route.

Important: BOP custody and USMS pretrial custody are different. The BOP locator does not replace the federal docket for a pretrial release.

Confirm BOP Federal Release

The Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator covers federal inmates incarcerated from 1982 to the present. Search by BOP register number in the five-digit, hyphen, three-digit format when known. Name search is also available. Match the result through register number, age, race and sex rather than name alone.

  1. Search by BOP register number or full name.
  2. Resolve the correct identity using the result fields and federal case record.
  3. Read the listed location and release date.
  4. Open the federal docket for judgment, release order and supervised-release terms.
  5. Check other custody when the result says released or not in BOP custody.

BOP results may display name, register number, age, race, sex, release date and location. “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” with no facility supports the end of BOP custody. BOP itself cautions that the person may be held by another law-enforcement system or may be on parole or supervised release. First Step Act recalculation can change a projected release date, so recheck a future date.

Note: A BOP release date confirms the federal prison event, not release from a Gates receiving jail.

Federal BOP Result Fields

The locator offers identifier and name search routes. An exact register number is the strongest public key, while a name can produce several candidates. The federal docket should be used to match the conviction, sentence and court history. Do not treat a similar name or age as sufficient proof.

FieldHow to read it
Register numberUnique BOP identifier tied to the federal record
LocationCurrent BOP institution or a no-custody result
Release dateProjected or recorded date shown by BOP
Age, race and sexIdentity checks, not standalone proof
Not in BOP custodyEnds only the BOP custody question

The locator does not show every fact in a federal sentence or USMS history. A release date can change because of recalculation. A federal judgment establishes the sentence, while BOP computes and executes its term. The docket can also show whether supervised release follows imprisonment. Those records should be read together when the date or status is disputed.

USMS Gates Custody Records

The U.S. Marshals Service prisoner program controls many federal pretrial prisoners from a detention order through acquittal or conviction and delivery to BOP. USMS may use a local contract facility. Research found no public USMS released-inmate locator. A disappearance from a contract jail can mean transfer to BOP, not freedom.

Use the federal docket, PACER or the federal clerk to locate detention, bond and release orders. After sentencing and BOP delivery, use the BOP locator. If the needed custody or transport record is held by USMS and is not public in the docket, use the agency's records process. Ask for existing documents tied to the person, case number and relevant date range.

Federal Custody Route
BOP: sentenced federal prisoner locator
USMS: federal pretrial custody and transport
Federal court: detention and release orders
No federal prison identified in Gates County

These channels solve separate propositions. The court order gives legal authority. USMS or the contract jail documents custody execution and transport. BOP records admission, location and later prison release. State and county systems may document a handoff but cannot certify the full federal history.

Federal Release Docket Evidence

A federal docket can identify the charge, detention order, bond conditions, judgment, sentence, dismissal, acquittal, and supervised-release term. It explains why custody changed. It may not record the exact minute the contract jail or BOP completed departure. Pair the order with the custody agency's record when actual physical release time matters.

A court order and custody timestamp can differ. Processing, identity checks and other holds may delay departure after an order is signed. Preserve each date with its label rather than choosing one. If a Gates outside jail reports transfer to federal authority, follow the federal trail until an affirmative release appears.

Federal Release Other Custody

“Not in BOP custody” is deliberately narrow. The person might be in state or county custody, under USMS control, on federal supervised release, or in immigration detention. Check the case facts for warrants, detainers, state judgments and immigration documents. No-result language should remain just as narrow: a BOP miss under the supplied identifiers is not proof that no federal pretrial custody existed.

If ICE facts appear, use the ICE current-custody locator and agency channels separately. An ICE detainer requests notice and up to 48 extra hours so immigration officers can assume custody. The request is not proof that a handoff occurred. If a North Carolina state sentence also appears, use NCDAC OPI to resolve that independent term.

USMS custody
Federal pretrial or transport control, often involving contract jails.
BOP custody
Federal prison custody for sentenced persons.
Supervised release
Court-ordered federal community supervision after imprisonment.
Detainer
A request tied to another authority that may affect the next custody.

Federal Gates Identity Checks

Collect the full name, date of birth, BOP register number, federal case number and approximate custody dates. A federal register number is more precise than a name. A docket number links the person to the court proceeding. When a local contract jail appears, obtain its booking number and departure event as well. This prevents one person's federal result from being attached to another person's Gates arrest.

Status conflicts should be documented with source and date. If BOP shows a release date while a contract jail reports transfer, ask whether the transfer was the earlier delivery into BOP. If a court shows release but BOP still lists custody, verify whether the order concerns a different count, term or phase. Never settle a conflict by selecting the most convenient screen.

The Gates County release-record search covers how the sheriff and outside jail records connect to federal evidence. A proper conclusion names the exact custody: released from BOP, released by court from USMS control, or transferred from a Gates-linked jail.

Federal Release Records Request

Request each record from its custodian. The Gates agency may hold arrest or transport material. An outside jail may hold the local booking and departure entry. The federal clerk holds official case-file copies. USMS owns many pretrial custody and transport records. BOP owns prison admission, location, computation and release records.

A useful request gives the person's full identity, federal case and register numbers, approximate date, and exact existing fields sought. Ask for native electronic copies where available. Do not ask an agency to make a custody history that does not exist. If a record is withheld or redacted, seek the public portion and the stated basis rather than assuming what the missing material says.

Scope check: End of federal custody does not automatically end state cases, local cases, immigration custody, or a federal supervision term.
