Gates County Supervision Types
North Carolina uses three community statuses that often look alike in a quick record check. Probation is a court-imposed sentence in the community. It may avoid confinement or follow a short term in custody. Parole is discretionary release for a person eligible under an older sentencing system. Post-release supervision follows the required prison portion of a structured-sentencing felony. The NCDAC Community Supervision division oversees people assigned to these forms of supervision, while the Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission sets or decides matters within its authority.
None of these labels proves when Gates County jail custody ended. A probationer may never have entered an NCDAC prison. A person on post-release supervision did leave state prison, but an outside Gates receiving jail may have a separate earlier booking and release record. Read the custody and supervision fields together.

These terms carry different legal effects. They should not be swapped just because each can involve an officer in the community.

- The formal end of a term of supervision, not just release from a jail or prison.
- Absconder
- A person alleged to have stopped contact or compliance while whereabouts are at issue.
- Detainer
- A request or hold tied to another authority that can affect custody after one case ends.
- Transfer
- A move from one custodian to another, not a return to the community.
Check Gates County Parole Records
The NCDAC Offender Public Information search, or OPI, is the main public verification route. It covers people who served an NCDAC sentence and people who are or were on North Carolina probation, parole, or post-release supervision. It does not cover a local-jail-only booking. A missing OPI result therefore cannot prove that a Gates County detainee was released.
Use a known offender number when possible. Name, sounds-like surname, date of birth, age range, and other identity fields help separate similar records. The detail view may show Inmate Status, Probation/Parole/Post Release Status, a supervising office, sentence service status, movements, and release dates. Match identity and conviction details before drawing a conclusion.
- Open OPI and choose Active Probationer-Parolee for a current supervision check. Use All when prior status may matter.
- Search by offender number, or narrow a name search with birth and demographic details.
- Open the correct record and read Inmate Status beside Probation/Parole/Post Release Status.
- Review the displayed supervising office. Confirm that office with current NCDAC information before using any contact or report detail.
- For the actual jail release event, check the Gates arrest and transport record, the outside receiving jail, SAVAN, and the court file.

Gates County Probation Office
NCDAC's older Gates resource directory labels a Gates County Probation Office-Satellite at the county courthouse and a Chowan County Probation Office-Main in Edenton. The directory is useful for orientation, but it contains a phone conflict for the Gates listing. One entry gives 252-357-0679, while the same legacy document also prints 252-357-2411. That conflict makes a current OPI office field and direct NCDAC confirmation more reliable than copying reporting instructions from the PDF.

The same directory identifies the main office at 305 W. Freemason Street, Edenton, with 252-482-3702. A person should contact the office shown on the current offender record. Do not infer a reporting site from the county of arrest, and do not publish or guess an individual's schedule.
Gates County Absconder Search
NCDAC maintains a separate Absconded Probationer Search. It accepts a surname and county of supervision. This is a meaningful Gates County supervision channel because no sheriff-published county absconder or warrant list was located. An absconder entry means the supervision system alleges the person failed to remain in contact or comply and that the person's whereabouts are at issue.

Use the result as a lead about supervision status. It is not current-jail proof. Compare the individual OPI record, SAVAN status, any receiving-jail record, and public warrant or court information. A person can be wanted within the supervision system without appearing in a Gates County jail source, particularly when detention is handled outside the county.

Gates County Supervision Violations
Conditions can require contact with an officer and compliance with case-specific directions. Public OPI fields show basic status, not the full confidential supervision file. A missed contact, alleged violation, modification, arrest, and revocation are not interchangeable. The Commission may continue, modify, or revoke a form of supervision within its authority, while a court handles probation matters under the governing order and law.
When an alleged violation changes custody, confirm the new event with its source. SAVAN can report a jail, prison, probation, or parole event, but a transfer alert is not community release. Court records can show a filed violation or order, yet the jail that performs a release holds the gate transaction. This source-by-source check matters in Gates County because the sheriff may transport a person to another county facility.
Gates County Supervision Alerts
North Carolina brands its VINE-connected service as NC SAVAN. The service electronically links all North Carolina jails and Adult Correction, including prison, probation, and parole. It can supplement an OPI check by reporting an event from a participating source. For Gates County, that statewide connection is useful because a person processed locally may enter a jail in another county.
SAVAN has limits. It does not monitor a person held only at a police precinct, someone who bonds at the magistrate level without booking, juveniles, or patients in a mental facility. A no-result cannot prove release or the end of supervision. When SAVAN reports a transfer, identify the next custodian and register again if needed. Registry status is a separate subject. The NC SBI Sex Offender Registry covers only people legally required to register. A registry result does not establish when a person left jail, and a miss does not establish that supervision ended. Supervision, custody, and registration must each be verified through their own official source.
Gates County Reentry Services
A regional Local Reentry Council once covered Gates, Hertford, Chowan, and Bertie counties. An official Gates County packet states that NCDAC funding was not renewed for fiscal year 2025-26 and that an extension ended September 30, 2025. That dated program listing should not be treated as proof the council is still operating.
NCDAC still hosts a Gates County reentry resource directory. Use it as a starting list, then verify each provider and service directly. Program status can change, and an older directory does not create a supervision instruction. The assigned officer or current NCDAC office remains the correct source for an individual's formal conditions.

Gates County Supervision Discharge
Supervision ends through a formal discharge or other authorized closure, not merely because a person stops appearing in a search. OPI may retain historical periods and basic sentence data after active supervision ends. Review the status, service dates, and prior supervision periods together. If the public display is unclear, request the specific public fields from NCDAC and identify the offender number and term.
The North Carolina Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission handles Commission matters at 2020 Yonkers Road, 4222 MSC, Raleigh, NC 27699-4222; 919-716-3010; Parole.Commission@dac.nc.gov. It sets conditions and decides older-law parole and post-release matters within its authority. It does not choose the statutory prison-release date for a structured-sentencing case.
Ordinary parole review is an individual file review, not a conventional public hearing. Commissioners review and vote individually and do not usually meet face-to-face with the prisoner. No ordinary public hearing calendar or searchable decisions portal was identified. Public verification therefore rests on OPI's parole and status fields, the Commission's official process material, and direct Commission contact. Confidential denial reasons should not be inferred from a public status line.
Older-law eligibility is governed by the offense date, complete sentence, and applicable exceptions. Commission guidance says crimes before October 1, 1994 may qualify for parole, while structured-sentencing prisoners generally enter post-release supervision instead. DWI and offense-specific rules can differ. A public record should be used to verify the reported status, not to calculate an individual parole date from a single sentence field.
For a county-only probation sentence, use the court order, OPI status, and the displayed supervision office. For a prison term, pair Actual Release Date with supervision status. For a local Gates County booking, obtain the outside jail's release entry separately. This keeps discharge from supervision distinct from the date a person left a jail or prison.
